Book Two: Evil at the Gate
Just a day after Samuel’s latest miraculous heroic in saving the king’s life, a bitter enemy unexpectedly presents himself at the city gate. Bringing with him a surprise proposal.
But there is other business to address first. In response to the Order of Aaron’s plot to assassinate King Josiah, thwarted by Samuel, a raid of Bethel is carried out. Before setting out, a surprise visitor shows up at Samuel’s door.
Despite these foreboding developments, Samuel takes comfort in the fact that the king and his advisors are now on board with bolstering palace security. But peace of mind is shattered upon returning from Bethel to find that their stalker–he who calls himself Satan–has found a way to circumvent their new measures. Leaving behind threatening messages that puts everyone at unrest.
With the stakes raised by the growing Amalekite/Cainite threat, the court agrees to listen to the portions of the Book of Satan as translated by Amos and Abimelech. They include stories which are familiar, but with a different twist, all with interesting implication for the current matters at hand.
As the contest for the king’s life heats up, so too does the investigation into the disappearance of Hoshea the priest and the city guard from the night of the Shavuot festival feast. All of this together combines to tighten the vice on Samuel even further as ghosts from past and present continue to converge upon him.
We also learn more about the back stories of central characters in the story, including Huldah the prophetess, and how they come to bear in the unfolding drama in the rise of subsequent troubles of Jerusalem’s most promising king and kingdom.
